If you want more control on what’s running on your computer, try HijackThis! (not assosicated with diggthis!). This is a very simple program that lets you view any application or process that’s running. No installation is needed, just run it and mark any line you don’t want to load and press on Delete. Be careful on what you delete though and always keep a backup.

Avoid spam by replacing your hosts file

Here’s a very simple way to avoid commercials and pop-ups in internet explorer with no installation what so ever, or any pop-up blockers programs. All you have to do is to replace your hosts file (located in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) with the one that can be downloaded here.

This file consists of thousands of IP addresses of the largest advertisements companies. What this file does, without getting dirty with technical networking details, is telling your internet browser, of any kind, to present DNS error instead of the ad coming from the IP addresses on this list. After you’ll replace the file, surfing eBay, Amazon and WSJ will never be the same.

Tired of e-mail spamming? Try Mailinator

Mailinator can eliminate your spam; it’s as simple as that. Whenever you register to any site that requires an e-mail verification - just write down something@mailinator.com (”something” can be anything your heart desire at that moment) and then go to the Mailinator site and retrieve the mails sent to that address. Instant, quick and ever-ready e-mail addresses you can use at any given time. You don’t have to open an account, the e-mail address is automatically created whenever an e-mail is sent to that address and after you read it, the address (and e-mail) will be deleted.

Enhance searching capabilities in Internet Explorer

Inline Search is a great plugin for Internet Explorer that really helps you, without even noticing it’s there. You install it once and then forgets it’s there, until you press the ctrl+f key; then, the plugin is opened (at the bottom of the explorer window) and allows you to easily search, highlight and find the previous and next keyword.
